William W. Summers

William W. Summers was key to integrating baseball in Iredell County. He was a Little League and Babe Ruth coach for over 30 years. He began in 1959 as the coach of the first African-American Little League baseball team in Iredell County. He continued to coach Little League Baseball and in 1978, coached the 11-12 year old team to a championship. In 1979, Summers began to coach Babe Ruth Baseball and lead the 14-15 year old team to a League Championship in 1981. That year he was named the All-Star Team coach.
Many players attribute their success today to the time they were coached by William Summers in Little League or Babe Ruth.
Not only was Summers active with Little League and Babe Ruth, he served on the North Iredell High School Athletic Booster Board from 1981-1984.
Summers was inducted into the Iredell County Sports Hall of Fame with the Harold Johnson Community Partner Award in 2018 .
