Tyrone Westmoreland

Tyrone Westmoreland was a three-sport star at South Iredell from 1989-93. He finished his football career for the Vikings with 6,602 rushing yards, 20th in state history, and 92 touchdowns, 22nd in state history. He was named All-Conference all four years. He was named Foothills Conference Player of the Year and selected to play in the Shrine Bowl and the East-West All-Star game his senior year. He was 1992 State Champion for the 160-weight class with a record of 124-3. Tyrone was Conference Wrestler of the Year twice and was All-Conference all four years. Westmoreland earned all-conference honors in 1991 and 1992 in track. His 400-meter relay team finished third in the 3A state championship.
He was recognized by Sports Illustrated in “Faces in the Crowd” in 1993. Westmoreland is the only athlete from Iredell County ever named North Carolina Male Athlete of the Year (1993). Tyrone was an inaugural member of the South Iredell Athletic Hall of Fame.
Westmoreland wrapped up his Carson-Newman career as a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference selection, the league's offensive player of the year and an All-American. In 1997, he became Carson-Newman's first Harlon Hill Trophy Finalist, the Division II Heisman trophy. With 3,388 yards rushing, Westmoreland is the program's sixth all-time leading rusher. He helped guide the Eagles to four straight SAC titles, four straight NCAA playoff appearances and the Eagles' first berth in the NCAA Division II title game in 1996. He was inducted into the Carson-Newman Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.
