Sandra Torrence

Sandra Torrence was a pioneer for female coaches in Iredell County. She attended Mooresville High School and was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1968. She went on to Mitchell College and was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1970.
Torrence graduated and began her career in athletics at Corriher-Lipe Junior High as Athletic Director and coach of basketball, volleyball and softball from 1970 -1985. She moved to South Iredell to become the Volleyball, Basketball and Softball coach. For volleyball, she led them to the Foothills Athletic Conference Championship and Sectional Champions in 1992. For basketball, Torrence coached the Vikings to two Foothills Athletic Conference Championships in 1990-1991 and 1991-1992. Torrence was named Coach of the Year for the Foothills Athletic Conference in 1987-1988. For softball, she led the Vikings to three straight Foothills Athletic Conference Championships in the early 1990s.
In 1995, Torrence was named as Athletic Director for South Iredell, becoming the first woman to hold the role in Iredell County. She was also named North Carolina High School Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 1992. Twenty years later in 2012, Torrence was awarded the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Special Person Award for her service to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Sandra currently serves as Conference Executive Secretary for two local high school conferences.
