Neill McGeachy
Year Inducted: 2016
Following a stellar sports career at Statesville High School, Neill McGeachy was a three-year starter and helped lead Lenoir-Rhyne to two regular season and two Carolina Conference tournament titles. McGeachy, a 1,000-point scorer in his career, was twice chosen to the All-District 26 squad. On the gridiron, McGeachy earned All-American honors while setting a Conference Carolinas record for receiving yards in a season with 736.
McGeachy spent three years coaching at Statesville High School in between tryouts with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and the ABA's Carolina Cougars. He then was an assistant under Terry Holland at Davidson for two years, winning two Southern Conference titles. He was Duke’s head coach for a season and led the Blue Devils to their 1,000th win. He also served on Carl Tacy's staff at Wake Forest before leaving coaching at the end of the 1976 season.
McGeachy and his son, Roderick, won two North Carolina Father/Son Championships and competed in the national championships as well. McGeachy served as president of the North Carolina Tennis Foundation. McGeachy was director of marketing with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Southern Section from 1997-2002. He was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 1999 and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
McGeachy was inducted into the L-R’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. He returned to his alma mater its athletics director from 2002 to 2016, taking the department to new heights. In 2019, L-R inaugurated the Neill McGeachy Sports Performance Center.
