Gene Abercrombie

Gene Abercrombie was head football coach at Statesville High School from 1966 to 1976 during integration. Abercrombie led the Greyhounds to the Piedmont Conference Championship in 1966 with an impressive 11-1 record. That year he was named NC Scholastic Football Coach of the Year. He was also head coach of the winning West team in the 1969 East-West All-Star Game. He served as athletic director at SHS until 1979. Later in life he was honored with NC Football Coaches Association Lifetime Membership and its Service Award.
