Garry Mott

Garry Mott was multi-sport athlete at Statesville High School from 1969-1972. He played football, basketball and ran track. He lettered in 1970, ’71 and ’72 in all three sports. He received the offensive back award in 1970, all-conference in 1970 and 1971 for football. Mott was named Most Valuable Player in 1971 and was selected to play in the 1972 East-West All-Star Game.
He signed a full scholarship to play football at the University of South Carolina. Mott ranks second all-time in USC history for tackles in a season (1973) with an impressive 167. During his time at USC, he was the first African-American Co-Captain of the football team and received the Coach Rex Enright Captain’s Cup. Mott was captain and leader of the 1975 team, considered the 7th best team in USC history per The State newspaper. 20 years later, USC paid homage to Mott with his image on a game ticket during the 1995 season.
The Statesville Record and Landmark named Mott the 2nd best football player of all-time from Statesville High School in 2008.
