Donald Eugene Spencer

Donald Eugene “The Colonel” Spencer was a man of no-nonsense attitude, an ethic of hard work and a physical presence. Originally from Las Vegas, Spencer came to Iredell County after his service to our country in the United States Marine Corps. He was employed by Mitchell Community College as the Dean of Students. Spencer’s love of sports led him to coach the Mitchell Mavericks baseball and basketball teams.
Spencer led the 1973 and 1974 teams to the Western Carolina Junior College baseball title. The 1974 team went on to the Eastern District Playoffs and a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series at Sam Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Mavericks defeated Kankakee Community College finishing the season an impressive 42-4. Spencer was named Southern District Coach of the Year in 1974 by the Professional Baseball Writers Association.
Spencer was a man that not only led on and off the field; he developed young men into what they are today.
