David Stamey

West Iredell’s David Stamey was Associated Press All-State receiver after leading the state with 62 receptions, a mark that was second in state history. As a junior, Stamey led the conference in receptions in West’s only 10-0 season in school history. He had 1,300+ career yards. In basketball, Stamey became West Iredell’s first-ever 1,000-point scorer the night he scored a school record 43 points. He was AAU All-State with perennial power Charlotte AAU, leading the team in scoring in the state and national tournaments. He pitched one of West Iredell’s few No-hitters and was All-Conference in all three sports.
Furman University gave Stamey one of county’s first Division I basketball scholarships. A four-time Southern Conference Honor Roll member, he was named Academic All-America-Southeast after a senior year Top 20 in the Southern Conference in points, 3-pointers, assists and steals and Furman’s Defensive MVP. He had a career-high 27 points vs Marshall in the SoCon Tournament. Iredell’s only basketball and football Division I athlete, he returned his 5th fall to play receiver on Furman’s football team, catching a pass in Kenan Stadium vs UNC.
The 1993 ACC All-Star Game at SHS saw Stamey lead all scorers with 32 points. He then played a year in Spain, averaged 39 points and his team won the Aragon Cup. He was also a player-coach for the Zaragoza Lions, going to the national semi-finals in Spain’s American Football League.
