Bill Mayhew

Bill Mayhew, a 1959 graduate of Mooresville High School, was a three-sport star, playing football, wrestling and baseball. He was a two-time wrestling State Champion and All-Conference in football and baseball. Mayhew was awarded the Earl Caldwell Memorial Trophy his senior year. He went on to Appalachian State, starting three years in football and four years in wrestling, undefeated 3 out of those 4 years.
Mayhew came back to Iredell County to coach wrestling and football at Troutman High School and then South Iredell. North Carolina’s All-Time Winningest Wrestling Coach, he is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, North Carolina Athletic Association Hall of Fame, Mooresville High School Athletic Hall of Fame and South Iredell High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Mayhew was recognized as “Faces in the Crowd” by Sports Illustrated in 1998.
Each year the North Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association honors their long-time contributors with the Bill Mayhew Legacy in Wrestling Award. In 2009, South Iredell cemented Mayhew’s legacy by naming its new gym after him and fellow long-time South Iredell coach Gary Sherrill, the Mayhew-Sherrill Gymnasium.
