Ann Ellis Chappell

Ann Ellis Chappell was a basketball standout at South Iredell High School from 1970-1973. She holds the South Iredell High School record for most points scored in a single game with 60 points, most points scored in a single season with 656 points and the all-time leading scorer with 2,166 points. She was conference Player of the Year in ’71, ’72 and ’73. She was all-conference and all-tournament all four years at South Iredell. She was all-state in ’72 and ’73. Ann was recognized as the first female to be named WBTV Athlete of the Week. She was inducted in the inaugural class of the South Iredell Athletic Hall of Fame and her jersey #14 is retired at South Iredell.

Ann’s contributions on the court are as impressive as her credentials off the court with over 56 young ladies playing in college from her coaching. She coached her AAU team to a National AAU Tournament Title. “She made me better, she made us better, and she left her footprint on my heart,” stated former athlete Tracy Connor-Riddick. Ann passed away on July 1, 2005.
