Dr. Fred Long, Jr

Dr. Fred Long, Jr. graduated top of his class at Morningside High School in 1964, where he was a standout athlete in football, baseball and basketball. He entered Shaw University in Raleigh and excelled in academics and athletics. He was second baseman of the Jimmy Lytle-coached baseball team and an outstanding running back on the football team. He was All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in both sports. In 1989, Dr. Long was inducted into the Shaw University Athletic Hall of Fame.

He graduated from Shaw in 1968 and entered Meherry Medical College. He graduated from Meherry in 1972 in General Surgery and completed his surgical residency at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. Dr. Long established his medical practice in Raleigh in 1978. He served as Clinical Instructor of General Surgery at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He also served as Medical Advisor to the Shaw University Kinesiotherapy Program. In 1988 he was honored with the Shaw University Alumni Achievement Award. In 2012, Dr. Long was posthumously awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Shaw University.

Dr. Fred Long, Jr. not only served his community for 32 years but touched many lives with his warm, friendly and outgoing personality through the practice of general surgery and his service to mankind in the Raleigh community. His service reached organizations and associations on state and national levels. Dr. Long’s legacy has been honored by the Shaw University UNCF Medical Symposium in his name since 2012. With the support of Dr. Long’s former Shaw teammates, his family established The Dr. Fred Long, Jr Foundation in 2011.
